The MATTadors Top 11 for 2011.......

2011..... well its come and its so nearly gone, but what it has left us with is one of the most exciting years in music I can remember. Month after month new artists and the evolution of those artists we have already grown to love have graced us all with an barrage of new and truly exceptional music. I though I would reflect on some of the highlights of my musical year with a snapshot and a link to each of my top eleven songs of 2011 -

"Lay it Down" by the Rubens. If you have yet to feel the warm serenade of these guys then you have truly missed out a magical part of what Australia has produced this year. They will explode in 2012 and I cant wait to be there and take some of the shrapnel straight in the ear!

"Brother" by Matt Corby. Fresh off the JJJ playlist Matt is quickly becoming one of the biggest finds of 2011 - Runner up in a TV singing quest (cant even bring myself to write it's name) Matt disappeared for a couple of years before returning with what is one of the most amazing and unique voices I've heard. No doubt soon to be eaten alive by commercial radio jump on board quick to the Corby train because it is going places in 2012! -

"All I Want is you" by Ball Park Music. A Brissy band that has somewhat softened the blow of loosing my beloved Powderfinger this year. A 6 piece that took out JJJ's Unearthed band of the year award recently had put together an eclectic blend of all there years spent creating music on their first album release "Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs". What more can I say other than have a listen - Truly fantastic pop! -

"Feeding Line" by Boy & Bear. Well, what more can be said really about this fantastic Australian Folk rock band. I predicted earlier in the year you should all get on board this journey because they were going places but I had no idea they would climb to the top of the ARIA tree in 2011. Much love to this band, cant wait to see what's next............

"City Girl" by The Jezabels. Possibly one of the most polished live acts i've seen EVA! They totally owned the Tivoli in September and the power they produced live is indescribable! To pick a song from this wonderful debut album is very difficult, but City Girl gets the nod (this time anyway). Once again massive congrats to yet another Aussie band leading the charge to take over the world!

"Truth" by Alexander Ebert. Starting and finishing with a whistle, this song sinks its hooks in with a beat that challenges you not to tap your foot. Alexander Ebert (front man for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's) has made every post a winner with his first solo release, released early in 2011 to took its place in my top eleven early and was never removed.

"Little Hell" by City and Colour. My favourate song off the album of the same name. Exquisite guitar, incredible vocals and a lyrical masterpiece. What more can I add, other than to point out how rare it is for me to add an album into my all time top 10, Welcome to the top 10 Little Hell!!

"Royal Blue" by Cold War Kids. A very early contender for my favourate song of the year that was only surpassed late in the year. "No Light, No Light" by Florence + the Machine. Florence and her very wonderful machine have delivered a Christmas present that although somewhat expected is still breathtakingly brilliant. There is the top level of live performers, then there is Florence ..... chills, that is all!

"Calgary" by Bon Iver. The heavily anticipated second release from this amazing musician lived up to all expectations. Many great songs off the self titled album made it very hard to choose one however the first release was the tune that I always returned too, enjoy this mans voice it is truly original!

"Video Games" by Lana Del Ray- Credit to Mrs MATTador for this entry, hauntingly brilliant! This song mesmerises me, almost like the finish always come way too soon. Luckily we can simply hit repeat and start all over again.

Hi everyone, I had a very excited email from our friend the MATTador a couple of days ago, letting me know about a new favourite band he wanted to share with you.........

The Music MATTador............

Well Heellloooooo!!! I hope all of you are well and the beginnings of the summer season are shining brightly on you all!!! My apologies for the lack of new music in the past weeks, an onslaught of amazing new releases in the first 2/3rd's of 2011 meant a slight burnout and need for some rest on the writing front. I have managed to climb out of the shallow writers block hole and decided that rather than deliver something each week I will wait to be inspired before I deliver.

Inspiration has returned in a big ball of awesomeness called "The Rubens"! This fantastically original group of three Brothers and a childhood friend formed only 9 months ago and have already began to create waves the size of a tsunami on the Australian music scene. Hailing from the tiny town of Menangle NSW and to this stage only releasing five songs it feels to me like being at a magic show, you know something amazing is about to happen but your unsure of what.

Over the last month or so I have been listening to a gutsy and raw bluesy group from the states - "The Black Keys". One of those amazing bands that you can tend to forget about for a while and when you here them again you think to yourself man these guys are the bomb! In saying all that I have swapped their CD in the last week for a continuous rotation of the first 3 songs from The Rubens!

These guys bring almost a new genre of music to the table combining a backbone of blues (Tremolo) guitar with a soulful and pop style of lyric. The recording studio is a family bedroom in a bush house which seems to add to the rawness, add to the mix plenty of reverb and some organ sounds and you have my new favourate band.

The four piece are brining their show to Brisbane for the first time in December and I for one will defiantly be in attendance. Their debut album will be recorded in New York by a "Big Name" producer in the music industry and will be released in 2012, not bad for a few blokes from country town in NSW.

I must admit, I didn't actually know who these guys were, our kids & nieces on the other hand certainly did ...

While doing the touristy thing at Circular Quay we were very fortunate to see & hear them play live..... Alexa is fantastic...

When they finished, Alexa told all the adults to move back, & ushered all the kids to the front, then said she had something for them.... as you could imagine the kids were beside themselves...

The huge CUTE factor was what she had to share, it was her leftover lunch of an apple & some chips.... it was very precious & the kids loved her mingling & chatting .....

THE MUSIC MATTADOR......

Yet another week of this amazing year passes with the release of a magnificent debut album from an Australian band. A perfectly timed release to celebrate the dawn of spring this album comes packed full of youthful energy that I promise will invigorate and blast away the remains of a chilly winter.

The Jezabels formed after meeting at the University of Sydney, quite specifically anchored in the roots of Indy, their sub character is hard to define with aspects of pop, rock and absolute originality enabling them to swim around in the pool of just dam awesome and who cares what pigeon hole they fit in!

3 EP's down and ever evolving, the band has developed into what could become one of the worlds most exciting commodities. Despite a stampede of major labels chasing their signature the decision to release their debut album 'Prisioner' as an independent group could see them match it with the most successful Australian independent artist of all time 'John Butler'.

Prisoner is an exhausting combination of emotions and power vocals that seem to swirl together into a cyclone of musical brilliance. The melodies swell and lead themselves into sky high climaxes while the obvious layers of sound mean the album slowly reveals it 'self like a blooming flower bud. This album is so full of sound that the instrumental interlude acts as a peaceful armchair to sit back and relax on before finishing the journey.

For me there are obvious influences of the grungy edge seen in musicians like Kate Bush and Cindy Lauper however in saying that, there is something completely unique about the Jezabels. From all accounts their live performance rivals all that are performing in the festival arena today, completely dominating main stages and winning the hearts of all new onlookers. This combined with the looks of a cover model it is hard to imagine just where the Jezabels will finish, only one thing is certain - I will be there following them all the way.

He's Back: The Music MATTador..... & we're glad !!

Welcome back MATTador I certainly have missed not receiving your musical insights the past two weeks.....

THe Music MATTador:

Sorry for the absence - life gets in the way of everything sometimes - hopefully this weeks artist makes up for it.

It's always very exciting to witness the very beginnings of something that in the back of your mind you believe could be a real success. There's something about the anticipation of what's to come and the knowledge that you were a part of the initial fan base. Imagine how the people in the crowd of 'The Beatles' or Nirvana's first gig's would feel today being able to tell there grandkids 'how amazing' they were (even though they were probably pretty bad). Now i'm not predicting that these kids will reach any where near the heights of these bands that are now legendary but I am telling you they are very impressive, and the fact that they are all still in high school and producing such well rounded indy pop in such a heavily soaked market.... well lets just say they stand out in a crowd.

This week I am very excited to reveal an artist that has won it's place on JJJ radio by winning the 'Unearthed High' competition, a comp that invites all high school bands and musicians to enter for one major prize, radio air play and recording of their debut release.

From Rudolf Stiener School Melbourne - Snakadaktal (Snack-a-dak-tl) formed in 2010 as a group of friends with similar interests in discovering and experimenting with sound. What developed was a tight dream pop sound with extremely solid and perfectly matched vocals. For a band at such an early stage of their existence they offer a wonderful refreshing style of indy pop, at times they have you fixated on lyrical delivery while almost simultaneously leaving you with a feeling of freedom and weightlessness.

Richard Kingsmil (JJJ musical director) has nailed this one!

Chosen from a group of very talented finalists I must admit I didn't even pick them as the winners, however I am very pleased they did. The JJJ recording of their first single 'AIR' is below and sure you will all agree these kids are very very impressive.

It's work experience week & we have had the pleasure of hosting Jacqui & Emma, two lovely girls I've known for a number of years (scary how quickly the years pass...) Anyway, I digress, this afternoon we joined friend & fellow local photographer Tina Metcalf & her two students Isabella & Joy, for a shoot..

Tina had organised Vicky & Mackenzie to be photographed, it is our pleasure to share these few images....

Vicky was absolutely amazing to shoot, (this shot was taken using a window & a piece of red cloth) & all of us were enraptured by Mackenzie....

Well it just keeps coming... 2011 has already produced some amazing music and this weeks artist is no exception, Exceptional, yes!

To be classed as unique in this day and age in an increasingly difficult label to be awarded. In fact so many talented artists are immediately compared to past greats of the music industry that it erks me a little that they are not simply allowed to be themselves.

Jamie Woon (South Londoner) is a fantastic exception, very rarely would we ever hear the words 'gee, you sound like............'. Woon's music would have to fall somewhere in the vicinity of R&B however that tag sits very uncomfortably with me as it is a genre that I have no real connection with. His vocals are simply astonishing, matched with a beautiful sense of timing and an underlying groove that seems to have an almost trance like rhythm.

As you can see by the link, the musicians of yesteryear would be dumb founded by his live setup, every 21st century gadget and programming tool combined with samples and traditional instruments such as guitars and drums combine like a chemical reaction to produce "Jamie Woon".

Once again I found it very difficult to pick a song this week as every you tube video I looked at seemed worthy, difference this week was my recent purchase of quality headphones. Now I'm not saying that you wont like this song without them however it was almost like a completely different song once I put them on. To say that I was transfixed for 6 minutes would be an understatement, arguably one of the most enjoyable musical experiences so far this year.

If you have access to headphones I urge you to put them on, dim the lights or turn them off, pour the beverage of your choice and prepare to enter a trance for the next 6 minutes.

The Music MATTAdor

They often say that what you are looking for is directly under your nose, that you can sometimes search too hard to find what you are looking for when in fact it is in your backyard the whole time.

Following last week's blog for me is very hard, I am so in love with City and Colour that it has made the search this week's artist one of the more difficult of the MATTador's adventure so far. The good news is I've found something that is hard not to enjoy, any person that even distinctly enjoys turning on the stereo and listening to a good tune will rate these guys.

As eluded to above the search went long and far before returning to my back door where I found a Rockhampton band Knocking. Busby Marou ( Thomas Busby & Jeremy Marou) pronounced Buzz-Bee a-Room, are long time friends that combine in a seamless way to produce beautiful melodic harmonies with exquisite guitar riffs and solo's. Marou has Torris Straight Island heritage that filters its way into their music, often fighting siblings to play the instruments in the house as a child guided his musical beginnings . Matou's background combined with Busby's beautiful lyrics and naturally raw vocals is a match made in musical heaven.

I love finding local (especially Queensland) based musicians that can cut it on a grand scale, I challenge any critic anywhere to knock these guys. If I had to describe them in a sentence I would say this - A band that would be as comfortable on the big stage in front of thousands of fans as they would be in the backyard singing for their families. It the initial stages of there career as a band Busby Marou are sure to evolve over the coming years into a household name across accross Australia, so jump on board and enjoy the ride.

Sometimes having one of 'those' weeks where you struggle to adapt to the pressure of 'being positive', can in itself be a positive thing. Reality can be harsh, a blunt wake up call that has no sugar coating and delivers with no room for hurt feelings. The truth is, life deals these cards to everybody and dwelling on them for too long will only create demons that should never dictate your existence. So we force ourselves to move on - overcome our 'Little Hell's and let happiness win.

The positive you ask? Simple. City and colour!

This album could possibly become one of the most listened to albums in my life. I have played it for the past 2 weeks continuously in my car and am still yet to feel the need to change it.

There is not one thing that I would change, it's almost soul cleansing music that for me took time to show it's true quality. At first glance it almost hides it's beauty behind a melancholy feeling of simplicity. However the further you dig the greater the treasures that lie buried.

Alexisonfires' (post-hardcore Canadian rock band) lead singer Dallas Green fronts 'City & Colour', a side project that couldn't be more diversified if he tried. From hard rock to lyric driven acoustic/rock magic, Green delivers on a level that I don't think even the true musical critics could have fathomed. The 3rd album from City and Colour "Little Hell" combines guitar perfection with vocal clarity that is crystal clear yet hauntingly emotional. Recorded in an old friends' (now deceased) studio that was once a church, it's hard not to feel connected, at least in some way, to the heart and soul that is obviously invested into this album.

The lyrics put quite simply are extremely raw, they detail many of Greens' relationships with his family, his friends and indeed the personal battles within himself. green was quoted as saying “You have to go through those little hells to get to the really great parts of love and life.” A theme that tends to underline the feeling of the album as a whole.

The first link below is a 15min interview with Dallas, filmed in the Church where the album was recorded offers insight from the horses mouth. If you are a true lover of music and enjoy understanding the what and why of a song and/or album than you will seriously enjoy this. There are so many tracks on this album that I would love to share with you all, the interview gives snippets of many in their development phase however as I am forced to choose one, it will be the title track "Little Hell". Not the track that I had initially intended to post but certainly one of my favs!! ('Grand Optimist, and natural disarster were very close to making the cut so make sure you check them out also)!!!

The Music MATTador: his magic continues

Well it may be a week later than I had originally planned due to an unexpected hijacking by some cowboys from WA however this weeks artist is worth waiting for. As mentioned briefly last week the Australian people have voted and this guy almost cracked the top ten. Coming in at number 11 in the Hottest Australian Albums of all time voted by Triple J listeners, Gotye (pronounced Gor-tee-er) with his album 'Like Drawing Blood' cemented it's place in music history. If you are yet to listen to this album in full it's well worth your time, a seriously impressive debut album that after a few spins will become a permanent addition to your 'favourite's' playlist.

Originally from Belgium, Wouter De Backer aka Wally to all of his Australian friends, moved to our wonderful nation as a young child and showed a passion for learning instruments early, the drums became his love and to this day remain the epicentre of everything Gotye.

His music is a layer cake of amazement that centres on a simple beat (played by Wally of course) added to the mix is a bunch of loops, a sprinkle of synthesized keyboard tricks and iced with a distinct and addictive voice. If this is your first introduction then prepare to be floored, with the sound of a four piece band and the song writing skills of a pop music genius Gotye is basically in a genre of his own.

When I listen to this music I get the feeling I am on a journey through a magical place, it's feels like you are being invited on a back stage tour of his innermost thoughts yet he wraps it all up in a melody that demands positive energy.

The second release from his forthcoming album (19th of August) 'Making Mirrors' is 'Somebody that I used to know' and features another wonderful Australian artist, Kimbra. The perfect example of simplicity and complexity entwined, it describes an obvious relationship breakdown, but yet again the infectious melody will have you looking for the repeat button over and over. I am sure this will soon make it's way on to the poisonous 'high rotation' playlists of all commercial radio stations so before it gets beaton to death please lend your ear to a master at work.......... Thankyou MATTAdor for another fabulous introduction to another amazing Aussie Band...

This weeks selection was a no brainer, an amazing Australian artist who's new single has just been released with the album due to follow in the coming month. He featured at the pointy end of Triple J's hottest 100 Australian Albums of all time poll (only revealed last week) nesting himself comfortably atop the pedestal of my favourite number (that's a clue for any of you who know my favourite number).

Then before you know it, from nowhere, Crisis! I stumble across a band that completely blows me away.

My decision is still an easy one (although deliberated heavily at my own mental round table) for one reason. I began this journey as the MATTador in the hope that I could share amazing artists/bands with you all and by doing so spread the joy that music brings to my life, this weeks artist epitomizes that philosophy.

This Australian group have it's roots heavily embedded in the Western Australian coastline, 3 old friends with years of memories and who's connection with each other is clearly evident in their song making. Jake and the cowboys (possible the best band name of all time) formed in 2009, played locally in 2010 and began collecting their share of acclaim last year by winning the Australian Indigenous Music scholarship.

JATC create music on a diverse scale that is difficult to pigeon hole. Not only do they debunk the popular perception of the typical 'Indignious Artist' they fuse elements of folk, pop, country and as seen in their latest single 'Brotherman' a touch of good old fashioned rock all with absolute precision. As you will hear when you embark on the journey via the link below, these guys are extremely talented musicians.

Their three song EP delivers Rock one minute, love and longing the next while finishing off with a hand clapping song that bounces along like one big ball of energy. Lyrically very delicate and honest JATC albeit very young in their life as a band deliver extremely mature and consistently complete music that has me asking one question over and over. Why have they not exploded all over our radios? I think the truth is I may be just a little early, give these guys 12 months and you will all be able to say 'I knew about them a year ago'!

Known in the west for their passion for playing live, I personally will be the first to grab a ticket when they come to Brizvagas (they assure me this will be sooner rather than later). I will keep you all posted on the dates and hope that we could all make a night of it!!

The past week we have been battling the dreaded flu, unbelievably nasty !!!!! Today though we are feeling better than we have for what feels like an eternity..... & my mood was dramatically improved when I read the report from our friend "The MATTador" ... Mrs Mattador knows her music as well, I certainly wouldn't be messing with her....

Well, I ate a piece of humble pie this week and to be completely honest it didn't taste that bad, in fact it was very sweet. After several attempts to 'try' and like this group simply because of who they are, I had written them off. Three individuals who on their own have made it to the upper echelon of Australian music and had tried their hardest to keep this project under wraps simply because of the stir it would create in the industry.

Mrs MATTadore says to me about a month ago - "hey i've found this new band, Seeker Lover Keeper", I cut her off in a hasty reply that went something like "Nuh I hate em, boring as, just cant get into them"!

There's my piece of pie right there!!

Seeker Lover Keeper is the collaboration of three amazing australian female musicians Holly Throsby, Sarah Blasco and Sally Seltman. Initially I had an underlying gut feeling that their sound echoed three individuals struggling to outdo each other in an epic battle to become the lead, however, upon release of their self titled debut album things became much clearer. The band decided to release three singles not one, each fronted by a different member in an attempt to showcase their uniformity and individuality. Their exquisite individual performances are perfectly supported by the accompanying duo, the three seem to almost enjoy watching each other shine while being genuinely grateful to be creatively involved.

I realised suddenly without any notice that I was taken by this song, I remember placing it (in my thoughts) as the perfect song to accompany an image viewing experience at the wonderful Moods studio. It's not that it was the first time I had herd it but on this specific occasion, for reasons unbeknown to me, the lyrics grabbed me and slapped me in the face. Whilst initially uninvited in my secure mental volt of 'great music', Seeker Lover Keeper has won over it's host, I am now more than happy to sit back and enjoy their sweet folk pop sounds and watch their journey with anticipation of what could evolve for these wonderful musicians.

Life is a very complicated and intense phenomenon. Everybody I know finds the daily tussle tough lately, whether that be caring for a family, working crazy hours or running a business, the truth is I think, if life's too easy than surely there is something you are missing. This in mind I feel it is also very important to try and keep perspective, even though I am not very good at this at all! Every now and then I find it reassuring to take a step back and apply all my focus on something as incidental and a song. Three or four minutes of sparse mental engagement with the reality of reality can be amazing when the it is reminds you that life is good. This weeks song did this for me recently.

This song is written by the enigmatic and soulful Mr Dan Sultan. It's aura reminded me of simplicity in a time (for me) of intensity. It helped me to take that deep breath that removes reality for just a second. It put a smile on my face and rejuvenated my day, truth be told I totally rocked out to this and by it's end was totally convinced I was Dan himself!

Rather than dive deep into Dan's bio and the emotional drive behind his music, this week I want to keep it really simple. This is a good old fashion rock song driven by one of our countries most talented and underrated performers.

Loose yourself for just a couple of minutes a day, please enjoy ..............................................

I'm so excited about this one Greg, I feel complete peace when I hear this music, it has truly moved into one of my favourite artists of all time - I'm talking top 3!

I have said many times already in my short lifespan as the MATTador that my love of a song and/or artist is based on one major factor, lyrics. I love to be challenged by a songs lyrics, often pondering in my semiconscious reasons that facilitate such imagery to be created. The ability of a lyricist to place a group of words in such a way the invokes thought, asks questions and drives the listener to place themselves as the leading character is truly what I love about music.

This artist does it completely differently!

Justin Vernon, front man for Bon Iver (French for Good Winter) is a genius. His first Album 'For Emma, Forever Ago' was released in July 2007 and too this day rates as one of my all-time favourites'. It was written and produced almost exclusively in a remote cabin during a Wisconsin winter, the astonishing thing is, his lyrics are mostly an after thought to his music, the basis of this music is feeling not understanding. Vernon wrote word-free melodies before listening to them repeatedly adding words according to the sounds of the syllables in each melody. He played all the instruments on the album and in his early performances it is reported that he handed out copies of the lyrics to his audience to help reproduce the vocal harmonies.

Bon Ivers' latest album 'Bon Iver' is one that I have been waiting for with more excitement and anticipation than any other in recent memory.

He describes his latest creation as a journey, not so much about describing certain places with words but rather creating a sense of place with music before finishing it of with lyrical harmonies that complement. I love this music not because of what it makes me think but because of the way it makes me feel, here's hoping it can do the same for you.

I encourage you to give these two albums more than one spin. If you think it is good today than I promise you, you will love it in time..........

I remember growing up not knowing exactly what I would become but wanted to make a difference doing it. I remember being 20 with fond memories albeit many of them hazy. Memories infused with feelings of fearlessness and intrigue, the whole world to explore and a whole life to do it. I was busy studying and getting my life sorted out, trying to figure out exactly what sort of impact I would make and how I could make it happen. Basically, like most of us there was no obvious plan, no one single 'talentl' that I possessed that I knew would define my life.

Imagine just for a second the opposite - At age 4 you are handed your first guitar, as a child you train classically for ten years and by age 16 you have already begun to master your art. Stir into the melting pot the difference between you and many other 16 year old musicians', the ability to write inventive and original peices of music, this my friends is the nucleus to something amazing. After school you pack up your gear and head around our vast country to play every available gig and busk on any corner that will see the passing of a pedestrian. Surfboard is packed for the ever elusive perfect wave, blond hair, blue eyes and all packaged into part time model good looks. Sounds pretty surreal yeah? Please say hello to Mr Kim Churchill -

Kim was born in Canberra, moved to NSW North Coast at a young age where surfing and music became his life. His exquisite ability to control the six strings of his guitar is beautifully unique, his classically refined art seems to entwine perfectly with his slightly experimental take on folk rock. He possesses an energy that I compare cautiously with Xavier Rudd, an energy that seems to fuel his desire to travel and play to the people consistanly with a full bag of emotion and passion each and every time..

Kim possesses a maturity much beyond his tender age, he delivers lyrics that guide the listener gently into thoughts of their past whilst cleverly prompting thoughts of the now. Kim is a storey teller, and like the best of those that have gone before him, there is more than one string to his bow. The infusion of harmonica, kick drum and piano combine in a way that seems effortless, overall a pure joy to listen too.....................

I have wanted to unveil this group for some time however my travels away from the folk rock genre in the past couple of weeks has meant that they have just had to wait. But no longer.... I can now unwrap them from their cotton wool and allow their amazing talents to reverberate in the ears of all of you that take the time to allow them into your lives.

This Sydney based Band formed in 2009, adding members one by one until the quintet - 'Boy and Bear' had arrived! I remember specifically where I was when I heard their first release 'Rabbit Song' which lead them to win the Triple J unearthed award and instantly become one of my favourite new acts. They have since toured with world class acts including Angus and Julia Stone, Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, the whole time without yet releasing a full length album.

Boy and Bear are very unique in their formation, five singer song writers who in the past have fronted their own groups. This combination adds a silver lining, a difference that can be felt as well as heard to their music. Boy and Bear deliver fantastic choir type harmonies over an underlining driving force of indie folk guitar, piano, ukulele, tamborine and a whistle (bloody love a whistle in a song). Put simply they are musically amazing, vibrant and a refreshingly new sound that makes you sit up and say 'who are these guys'?

I am torn like never before when it comes to choosing one song to serve on this weeks musical platter. Should it be their latest song 'Feeding Line', their absolute marvel of a cover produced for the 'He will have his way' tribute to Crowded House - 'Fall at Your Feet', or one of the amazing songs from their first EP Emperor Antarctica? Truth is if you love music, you are doing yourself a monumental injustice if you don't search for all of these songs and give them a good old fashion belting.

Drum roll please.............................. and the winner is 'Rabbit Song'!! The reason - because their entire catalogue of songs is still relatively small, this means you can take the same journey I have taken very easily on you tube or various other sights by simply using the little thing called google. if you enjoy this song you will love what you discover thereafter!!!!

The Music MATTador...............

There is a band that I cant wait to tell you all about but it must wait for just one more week as I have a mission to complete here on my journey down the track known as the slightly obscure.

While my musical tastes have yet to fully embrace the intriguing world of opera I do completely appreciate these people's ability to produce noise that is somewhat unbelievable!

I have recently embraced an artist that resembles what I would call 'as close as it gets' for me when it comes to opera.

'AUSTRA' is a solo project started by Katie Stelmanis (who's middle name is Austra, the 'Latvian Goddess of Light'), that evolved into a three piece (Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf), the Canadian group formed only last year and released their debut album last week titled 'Feel it break'. The aptly titled LP combines dark and almost dream like melodies warped into soft, subtle beats that create a magical carpet ride of an album.

Katie's voice totally dominates the song that I have chosen and introduces the listener to her incredible gift. This song and the album as a whole, leaves no question that if she had chosen opera no one could have second guessed her decision, luckily for us she didn't. Katie, the song writer of the group has written an album that is quite different to almost anything else I have heard this year and goes some of the way to blur the lines between opera and popular music. After ten years of writing her debut is spectacular and sure to rate highy in many critics top albums of 2011.

Here's a quick sneak peek from yesterdays wedding at the Novotel Twin Waters, the choice of location was perfect for Lili & Graham....

We had the chance to meet and photograph Lili & Graham a few years ago, so we were stoked when they contacted us about photographing their wedding..

The connection these guys share is truly beautiful so it was an absolute pleasure to share time again with them yesterday.

Huge thanks to everyone for being so fabulous, we had planned to do beach shots but were very concerned following the ceremony as it was obvious rain was imminent, so after a quick discussion we loaded in the Novotel Golf Carts & headed off to the beach, walking along the track leading to the beach the light was fantastic, all was looking good, down on the beach perfect.... out to sea though a rain squall was heading our way, we had just set up for the first group shot when it hit us.... thankfully we kept shooting and got some fabulous shots, (big plug for nikon cameras here... the seals on ours were fully tested yesterday & came through with flying colours... i hope)

There is no doubt when you read the Mattador's report that this guy is absolutely passionate about his music, I had the opportunity to catch up with him for a couple of hours last week, always good times, we did debate the fact that the the 80's was a good time for music......

While we debated & disagreed about 80's music there is no disagreeing with this weeks featured artist, one of my favourites (actually they accompanied me yesterday at the studio while I was working, musically that is...)

I spent some time with a great friend last week who told me they had created a playlist of 'significat songs' that sparked memories of special times or events in his life. Once again this got me thinking................

There are many many choices here for me but in keeping with last weeks decision to post something a little fired up my choices were shortlisted.

It was the middle of Summer, year 2000. It had been typical 32+ degree day and I was at a the Big Day Out, I think I had lost the equivalent of about 10l of fluids and needed something to give me the energy to go on. Water fountains were sparse and beer wasn't really helping the situation...... The sun had just started to set and despite all the pain associated with heat exhaustion the bands I had seen were freaking amazing. Old school greats like Regurgitator, Resin Dogs, Spiderbait and Grinspoon and headliners like Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Chemical Brothers still to come, I was in heaven.

This week's post is more about the specific time, song and lyrics as opposed to the normal run down of history and unknown trivia.

Enter Powderfinger! A band that needs no introduction and the band that I have seen live more than any other, put simply these guys hold a very sentimental place in the heart of the MATTador.

So now for the moment.... Close you eyes, place yourself within about 10 meters of the stage, and imagine being in a boiling hot bowl of sweaty people all gasping at any hint of a breeze that passes by the main stage while you sing along to every word that Bernard rips out. Cue the most freakin unbelievable coincidence in my musical memory! With the lyrics "cascading down" exiting Sir Bernard's lips and entering my eardrums, the sky's opened in typical Queensland fashion and the thunderstom hit. With the song 'DAF' my memory had been created.

Sigh................... What a wonderful day that was, I would love to hear some of your song provoked memories................................

I've been given the heads up (by Mrs MATTador) that it may be time to fire it up a bit this week. This got me thinking.......... which direction should I take, my musical tastes are so varied that I feel I am now standing in the middle of a five way intersection guessing which way to head that would inturn please everyone.

Then I had the epiphany, don't try and please everyone, just spend the next couple of weeks travelling a few different roads!! So, seatbelts on peeps here we go...

When I mention the next three words I want you to take a deep breath and push through the pain as I promise it will be much, much better that you will initially give me credit for........................... Aussie Hip Hop.

OK, I assume you have probably heard of a few Aussie artists that over the last two decades of so risen to be the most well know Aussie Hip Hop artists, Hilltop Hoods immediately springs to mind. They can probably take most of credit for bringing this genre into the spotlight as they showed us that to be successful in such a cut throat industry you need to connect immediately with the audience. They kicked the old gangsta rap template to the curb and made the Aussie Hip Hop style energetic, positive and something that in the end, made you feel good, and ask questions.

The one band that captured this feeling for me and kick start my love of Aussie Hip Hop was TZU. In 2004 they released their debut album 'Position Corrected' on the unsuspecting Australian public, it was overflowing with whity but profound lyrics to describe their home town and their love for it, Melbourne, Victoria. They had the unique ability to match a sense of social conscience with a sense of humour create live shows that are exhausting just to watch.

This year 'Joelistics', one half of TZU will release a solo album titled Voyager (May 20). What I have for you this week is a bit different, it is a link to a site at which you can purchase the song for as much as you wish or as little as 10c, sorta like the honesty jar on the side of the road. You can simply listen to the song if you wish, I payed $1 for mine.

The second variation this week is that I have two links for you all - I had initially planned to give you my interpretation of the song however, who better to do that than the man himself. His way with words is amazing..........! A very touchy subject in such volatile times shepherded perfectly into a song.

Well here's a 50 / 50 for you all. I love it!!! you may hate it, have a listen make up your own mind. The best thing about music is that is yours, yours to judge, yours to completely do with what you want, nobody can tell you that your views and opinions are wrong, because their yours. My goal here as the MATTador is not to tell you what music is good, but rather offer something new, wave the red flag as such, to offer something different than your everyday run of the mill pop artists.

Thats where James Blake comes in, a perfect example of an artist you will never hear on commercial radio, however, one that is so wonderfully talented. His music is a masterpiece of simplicity matched perfectly with a sublime intensity, Jeff Buckley like, in the way a voice can dominate a performance.

James Blake is a British electronic composer from London, his self-titled debut album was released in the UK on 7 February 2011 and is one of the most unique sounds I have heard.

According to many who have had the opportunity to experience James live it is a struggle to describe the unique qualities they experience, quite honestly I struggle to compair James to many other artists.

Each week our friend "The Music MATTador" shares a music report this us... please enjoy....

Well.... with the words Australia, The ANZAC's and childhood memories you can almost bring a tear to the eye of most 'true blue' blooded people in our beautiful country. We start this week with the memories of times gone by and the immediate thoughts of our good people serving overseas, all they have done and all they are still doing to enable us to call Australia home. Lest we forget.

In honour of these great people I thought I would introduce you to an artist that always brings a smile to my face because he reminds me just how good it is to be Australian. He reminds me a little of Paul Kelly in the way that he can tell you a story in a song, he makes you feel like you have just watched a movie because of the detail delivered in his lyrics.

Josh Pyke was born in Sydney NSW in 1977, he made his debut performance in front of 650 parents and students at his primary school graduation aged just 12 and in my humble opinion is one of the most under rated performers in this country. Josh combines his poetic and delightfully descriptive lyrics with amazing acoustic guitar hooks, the simplicity of him music is somewhat energising and addictive.

I have chosen the song 'The Summer' from his 2008 release 'Chimney's Afire' to share with you this week and just the thought of it makes me smile on the inside.

This week my Wife and 2 boys spent the week at the coast, we were lucky enough to spend the time with close family and meet some great people. The daughter of the family we met was the sweetest little girl you will ever meet, 'Zara', with her quaint english accent and tomboy style she stole the heart of my little boy Cooper (and mine along with it). They were best friends straight up and soon enough they were each other's shadow's.

This songs sums up my week perfectly - It started in the summer beach setting, so typically Australian, watching my 7 year old boy so innocently fall (as we described it) for his first summer love. While it ended with hand on heart and head bowed in remembrance. So light in one eye and so heavy in the other but a vision of Australia shone thought perfectly.

It's Tuesday: The Music MATTador.......

I'm off work for a week and I know you are feeling me when I say that this is one of the best feelings in the world....... arhhhhh!

I thought that this week I would share with you all a song from an artist that sums up that feeling, the same feeling that you get when you catch your first vision of the coastline as you hit your holiday destination.

Matt McHugh is the front man for an Ozzie band from New South Wales called The Beautiful girls, they have been knocking around the coastal music scene since the early 2000's mixing wonderfully poetic lyrics with sweet, free feeling acoustic rhythms. After their first album "Learn Yourself" their vision changed slightly taking them closer to a heavier reggae, bluesy edge however it's this first album that blew my mind.

Lyrically this is one of my favourite albums - it paints pictures of beautiful surrounds, peaceful and happy people and overall, just a reminder to appreciate all the simple things in life and be grateful for them. It reminds you that life is short and although work can encapsulate so much of or time and energy it really is the basics that makes the world spin.

This whole album feels like a grandfather talking to his grandson, passing on his values his stories and his lessons. It's an amazing thought provoking 45 minutes that gives you the feeling that Matt has been here and done it all before.

The album has the unique ability to do one of two things - sweep past you like a summer breeze allowing you to simply relax, or if you’re like me and listen closely to the lyrics, it will completely amaze and inspire you.

The song "Cash Money" is just one of about 8 songs on this album that truly help's put life in prospective, I chose this song simply because the film clip helps to complete the feeling of arhhhh!

Kate & Adam: Brisbane Weddings

We have had the pleasure of photographing some amazing weddings this year, in some absolutely to die for locations, New Zealand, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Redcliffe, in a few weeks we are at Twin Waters Resort..... we have been loving the locations & more so loving the couples we have the pleasure of photographing.... & last week was no exception, Adam, Kate, & their bridal party were FABULOUS !!!! This was one of those weddings where we just kept wanting to shoot... "Look we'll quickly grab another shot here, & one over here" ..... The day flowed so beautifully & was underpinned by an excited energy .....

This shot gives a very good insight to the personalities of Adam, Cassie & Bruce....

I love this image.... Kate & her Grandmother, we took some beautiful posed images as well but I love how real & unscripted the emotion is in this image, as a photographer you have the opportunity to capture some of lifes precious moments, I felt this was one of those.....

I love to see passion in a musician, true energy driven by a force that can be seen simply by watching a performance even without sound. There are many artists that I love for this reason, One in particular exudes this every time I see him perform, Ben Harper. Have you seen. him..... Someone that wears their heart on their sleeve in everything they do, someone that leaves nothing behind?

Ben Harper continues to amaze his fans who are as diverse as you will meet, put simply he covers most all age groups and musical genres and continues to expand his following with age old word of mouth. If you have never seen his DVD "Pleasure and Pain" do yourself a favour and take the time to walk in his shoes for 2 hours. There are so many fantastic examples of Bens' passion (seen beautifully on the DVD when he plays with his good friends and blues legends - The Blind Boys of Alabama) however it's his new project that has re-sparked my love of Ben Harper.

Fistful of Mercy is Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison (son of George). Forming in February 2010, after Arthur had asked Harper to jam at Carrage House Studios; Harper then asked Harrison, (whom he had met at a skate park in Santa Monica), to accompany them and the rest as they say is music history. The album was remarkably written and recorded in 3 days, even more remarkable is the quality of the song writing that evolved in those 3 days!

Harrison says the lyrics tell the journey of Fistful of Mercy. "I see the record as more people getting to know each other and testing each other's boundaries," he says.

"The first song we wrote together was 'I Don't Want to Waste Your Time,' because we all are a little nervous about wasting each other's time," Arthur says. "The album's kind of like a conversation -- a three-way conversation -- and sort of a document of friends becoming brothers."

Harrison has since been heard to relate the experience to his fathers brief stint with "The Travelling Wilburys". They have also been described by some as the "Crosby, Stills & Nash" of 2010. Jim Keltner (percussion) and Jessy Greene (violin) also participated in the recording.

The track is called "Fathers Son" and has a fantastic raw blues energy that pours out of all three artists, it will have you tapping your foot and nodding your head, go ahead and jump around, feel free to get a little loose! Blog Week 2

I am so pumped this week! The artist that I have for you pretty much sums up all my favourite things about music. I love acoustic driven songs, I love the raw squeak of the strings as the chords change, I love the how subtle it can be one second and yet powerful and bold the next. Combine the acoustics with beautiful song writing and a husky melodic voice and you've just ticked all the boxes. Man... this guy even has good looks to boot, I think I’m feeling some bromance here people.

Have you........ Ever been so excited by a moment because you know it will change your life for the better? We all have these moments on big occasions like children being born and our wedding days, but sometimes it can be something that to others may seem insignificant. I listen to allot of new music and 98% will pass me by without a second thought, but when I heard this artist for the first time, I got that feeling. Not because his music is as important as a major, life changing event but because it's something that makes me happy, and to me smiling and being happy is worth feeling passionate about.

'BOBBY LONG' (Robert Thomas Long) is a Wigan born, English, singer songwriter with an honest, raw approach to story telling through his music. He writes songs from the heart with meaningful lyrics, his folky style is tinged with elements of blues and even country. He is also a very talented musician, his guiiar playing skills shine through in his work leaving behind the simple 3 chord pop songs to deliver a masterful example of acoustic brilliance.

Bobby moved to London to attend university in the 90's where he graduated and gained his degree after writing his senior thesis on the social impact of American folk music. He began performing full time and writing new music throughout 2009 compiling an astonishing 80 songs. Bobby released his debut EP (that he recorded in his bedroom) independently before signing with the major label ATO records (home to other favourites of mine such as David Gray, Radiohead and Ben Kweller) only last year.

The link is to Bobbys' website on which you can listen to his entire debut album "A Winters Tale", although the whole thing is well worth your time I would suggest "Who've you been loving", "A Strangers Song" and "2 Years Old" (almost impossible to choose). If your a fan of Dylan's early years, Johnny Cash or Mumford and sons than I reckon this may tickle a fancy or 2. If you get the chance, sit back, relax and enjoy the simplicity and sweetness of this wonderful musician.................

Do you know a or have a person that amazes you? Somebody that constantly displays a skill/talent or quality that when you think about it during a fleeting moment of silence it makes you shake your head and say wow. I know many people like this in my life - My wife & kids make me feel like this every day & my brother.

The artist in this link is a man by the name of Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew, otherwise know in musical circles as 'PLAN B'. An English artist that decided on his name after initially trying his hand at R&B (as an 18 year old) then later deciding that this was not his thing (nor mine). Plan B is one amazing guy that when you sit back and think about exactly what he can do it should truly inspire you all to give something new a go. When you think of most musicians you would probably assume that they can sing possibly play an instrument or 2 and maybe even write a few songs. Well....

Check this out for a resume - Singer, Songwriter, Musician (guitar - self taught at 14), Rapper, Poet, author, actor, movie writer, movie producer and as he describes himself a 'Real life storyteller'.

The song you are about to hear is a live version of a song that came out in 2010 that I really loved, quite honestly I thought it was two totally different people singing until I dug a little deeper. Performed from RAK studios in London, this is a unique version of his song "She Said".
